Walter, despite having inflammatory rheumatism, still went fishing in the water work’s pond. He had a life that he couldn’t live up to, since he couldn’t lead a normal life because of his painful condition of the joints and muscle swelling. A friend of Walters, who was in school, began experiencing odd aching all over the body. He knew that this odd aching was a kind of condition Walter had and had feared that he too, had rheumatism disease. So he walked slowly and painfully home giving him a lot of time to think about what he had just come to a conclusion that he, also, has the same disease as Walter. The question that comes up in his mind is, will I die? The short story “Stolen Day” by Sherwood Anderson talks about the life of this young boy who had convinced himself that he has inflammatory rheumatism.
To begin with the mode and the plot line, the story is representing comedy. The purpose of comedy is to solve problems. The short story starts out normal, as the author starts introducing the boy named, Walter. The author is telling the reader how he has inflammatory rheumatism, and he goes fishing to make his aching feel better. Then the mild conflict is when it starts talking about Walter’s friend who was at school during the time, and who didn’t want to be in school anymore so he started sobbing to the teacher in hopes to go home. He basically deceived the teacher. Eventually the teacher did realize his discomfort and she let him go home. When he walked home, he was very discreet when he was experiencing aching from all over the body, then is when he started believing that he had inflammatory rheumatism. He then laid in bed, as his mother told him to do, than it suddenly disappeared. When he told his mom what he thought he had, then the pain came right back. He figured since Walter goes fishing to make him feel better why doesn’t he. So he then goes down to the stream to go fishing. When he was down there fishing, he had believed he had caught Mr. Fenn’s big carp. This fish was half the size of him. He was so amazed he brought it home and showed his family. They to all were so delirious during that spectacular moment that they had shared. In result, they all started laughing at him and his awful pain was gone.
Equally important to the guide lines is analyzing the characters. During the end of Stolen Day it said “So the Wyatt child went down there, played around alone, and fell in and drowned”. Walter’s friend’s mom was the one who found him. So he thought he could do the same. It said “She had a terrible look on her face, I remembered then.” “So,” I thought “they’ll miss me and there’ll be a search made”. He then was thinking that someone would eventually find him dead in the pond, and everybody would feel sorry for him. The author is trying to portray a lesson to the readers. That is, the ones who don’t get attention crave it. So they will do something very drastic to get what they want.
On the other hand this story relates to the short story, “The Lie” and “The Necklace”. These two short stories both have a main concept similar to each other. For example in both stories, they are trying to escape the truth. In the short story “The Necklace” the two main characters in both of the stories got laughed at, when doing so they were afflicted. All this bad behavior rubbed off on other people, that are trying their best. This just goes to show that you can’t let other people bring you down, you just got to live your life.
In the first place it just goes to show you in a different example of, what is right compared to what is wrong. Look at it this way, the people who do bad things make a path for you and others. You can either choose to take that path with them and suffer together, or you can make your own path and lead a luminous future that will shed light on new things. The author is also trying to tell you to make the right choice, and if you don’t you may suffer for the rest of your life.
A Critical Analysis of The Story of An Hour
This story takes place in the Mallard House Hold in 1854. The wife is Mrs. Louise Mallard who is married to Brently. Knowing that this story took place in the early 1850s women were supposed to get married when they were young. The women weren’t allowed to divorce and in that’s exactly what Mrs. Louise wants to do, but has no choice but to stay with Brently. In this story it explains with detail how her husband passes away and how she handles the loss of her husband.
The Story of An Hour by Kate Chopin is a tragedy. How tragedy works is M.C is involved with conflict then main character rises to power, tragic flaw, tragic fall, and then ends in dearth or loss. That relates to the story because first her husband was killed in an accident, her husband died so she is free, doesn’t have her husband to take care of her, sad that she has to live her life married because really her husband is still alive, and lastly she dies. This story is a perfect example of a tragedy. When reading the short story you can see all the little details the author uses when writing her story. For example, the delicious breath of rain was in the air, this is personification, meaning attributing human qualities to something that doesn’t have life. Also in the story is a paradox which means when you think one thing is going to happen but it doesn’t, it is like the opposite of what you think will happen. In the story the paradox occurs when the author has her husband, Brently Mallard, announced as dead, and then in the conclusion he re-enters the story alive. Everybody thought he was dead. Paradoxically, Mrs. Mallard who was relieved she would finally be free knowing her husband had died now has to live her life married to him, learning of the mistaken identity. To top it off, she dies! Some of the symbols used in this story is an open window, patches of blue in the sky, and a staircase. The patches of blue in the sky represent sadness like a dark gloomy day. The open window shows the freedom she uses to have and at the end of the story it shows how she doesn’t. The staircase symbolizes life and death; first, her husband is thought to be dead and then, in the end, he is alive and she dies.
Thus, we see that Mrs. Mallard does not handle the resurrection of her husband well, but preferred him dead. This story is Irony because everything in this story represents Irony. For example the symbols and how the story turned out. If you were in her position what would you do? Would you walk in her footsteps or do something completely unexpected?
Driven to Distraction Review
Laws have changed based on what lies ahead of us. State Senator Lyle Hillyard says “If you choose to drink and drive or if you choose to text and drive, you're assuming the same risk." Studies show that cell phone distractions cause at least 2,600 deaths a year. People are now taking action. In some states there punishment has increased if texting and driving. Don't be caught texting and driving.

The Lie
Having generations among generations going to Whitehill school for a long period of a time, the parents of this kid think why stop now when it is such a great school. They never thought that their kid would be the one to not get in. They both assumed that he was going to go to this school and have a successful life just like all the other family members did. The thought never occurred to them that their son would not pass the entrance test. Actually they never bothered to even ask him how it was. The story “The Lie” is by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., follows the guidelines of comedy.
Your parents always have high expectations. They always want to see you succeed and meet your goals in life. Sometimes your parents can get a little too carried away, and not realize that it can be more of their dream than yours. It is like they kind of take over your life. This is what happens in the story “The Lie”. This short story is about a boy trying to meet his parent’s standards. He is giving a hundred percent at everything he does. When he took the entrance exam for the school, Whitehill, all his effort just wasn’t enough. He got a letter in the mail telling him that he was not accepted. When he found out he ripped the letter up into a billion pieces, he was furious. He never told his parents about it because he didn’t do well, and his parents never bothered to ask. Later on in the story they finally realized that they never talked to him about it. When they did Eli felt embarrassed, but once he got it together and got up the courage to tell his parents they were disappointed at first, but they came around. Eli’s mother told him, “I’m glad they’ve got high standards, and that is why it’s such a famous school”.
You can tell that this story is a comedy by just looking at the symbols. For example, in the story they used descriptive words like willow twigs, gray frost, golden haze, and springtime. This clearly shows that this story is a comedy. Comedy’s purpose is to help us face the uncertainty of life. The steps of comedy start out as normalcy meaning that in the story it starts out with Eli trying to get in to WhiteHill by taking the entrance exam. Then it has a conflict which is when Eli took the exam he thought it was harder than he thought, and his parents never bothered to ask him how it went. Later on in the story the parents realized that they never bothered to ask him how it was, and when they tried he ran off. Eli ran off because he was afraid of what his parents would think. When he found out, “he slumped because he was denied admission to Whitehill”. Eli’s parents did not know this because Eli had found the awful notice in the mail and had torn it up. Then finally it gets back to normalcy and there is a sense of relief. When Eli’s parents found out that he didn’t make it they were both disappointed at first, but they tried not to let that get into their heads. They were so into this school that they didn’t even look at other schools to see what they were like. Once the parents both realized that they were at fault, they told Eli it didn’t matter because whatever school you want to go to is fine with us.
Desperately wanting Eli to go to WhiteHill and not making it just devastated the parents and Eli. The parents in the story don’t get along very well during the time where Eli got denied. The husband thinks he is a lot smarter than his wife, and to him his wife’s opinion didn’t matter. When not having the basic relationship skills in a marriage, it really can affect your family and yourself. For example, communication is very important as well as listening to others and what they have to say. In this story it shows that Eli doesn’t speak his mind when his father is around. There are some problems with this family that need to be fixed. If I were able to change the personality of the characters I would first start with the father. I would have him listen to people and make his bond stronger with Eli. He would listen to his wife’s opinion and not just ignore her. I would then make the wife more willing to follow Eli’s dreams and not hers. I think those thirty people from their family haven’t always wanted to go there, but they all did because of all the generations upon generations who went there before them. They just didn’t want to be the first person to mess up, and break the tradition of going to WhiteHill. Lastly, I would change Eli’s personality by having a better bond with his parents and telling his parents, how he feels about things like trying to get into WhiteHill.
I feel Eli was trapped in a black hole, he didn’t know what to do or say. He didn’t know who to turn to. He was afraid if he told his parents the horrendous news; they would be disappointed in him. If I were Eli I would tell my parents and show them the letter from the school even if I didn’t make it. It makes no sense to keep it from your parents when they’re going to find out sometime either sooner or later. That is just my thought on this whole situation. If you were in Eli’s shoes what would you do? Remember your parents would always find out sooner or later.
Melting Away
In Berlin, Germany a thousand small ice sculptures made by Nele Azevedo sit in a large public square. The little thousand ice sculptures start melting within 30 minutes. This shows us our global warming effects and how we need to take action. Because of this experiment we are going to beging to set limits on emissions of the greenhouse gases that cause this major problem

Poem
In the distance you see a scrumptious looking apple pie.
You here your stomach grumbling from a half mile away.
Your taste buds are kicking in and your mouth starts to overflow with water.
The closer you get the more you see all the details put into the apple pie.

The theme of “The Story of An Hour” is man vs. society. The reason being is because in this story Mrs. Louise Mallard is the wife of Brently. This story took place in 1854, and back then you weren’t allowed to divorce. So that sometimes that meant you were married to someone you didn’t like. When Mrs. Louise Mallard found out that her husband was in a accident, and that her husband died. She then felt free, meaning she doesn’t have her husband to take care of her. Later on in the story her husband shows up on the door step and is sad to realize that she has to live her life married because really her husband is still alive, and lastly she dies. This story is a perfect example of a tragedy.
Journal Question 2
A good example of man vs. himself is To Build a Fire. The reason being is because he can give up, try, or die trying. He tried hard, for example he walked for four miles an hour when trying to get back to his campsite. He came up with many ideas from trying to stop getting hypothermia in his fingers and toes. Some of his ideas were bad because when he set a fire it was underneath a tree, and set a big fire. So you always got to be careful when you are in the woods by yourself. He struggles when he is by himself, but he manages to pull through. Even when he had gotten wet from freezing ice cold water. He was so determined to live that he thought about killing a dog to bury his hands in, but decided not to. Then he realized it wasn’t a matter of freezing his fingers and toes, or of losing his hands and feet, but that it was a matter of life and death.

Journal Question
An example of a story of man vs. nature is To Build a Fire. The reason why is because man can’t control the weather and what animals are going to do. That is all in nature’s power. The only thing that man is in control of is their actions. Some other things is that man and nature are completely different. They both determine whether you are going to live or die. That is if you are stranded in the middle of nowhere. There could be a tornado, flood, hurricane, blizzard and much more this is what nature has in mind to do. There is no way you can change this.
Speak Essay
Think about being in high school and having your first year of high school being an outcast. That is exactly how Melinda feels. She is so depressed she doesn’t even know what to do with herself. Ever since she went to this party and called the police, she has feared Andy Evans. He raped her but she did not report it when the cops came. In high school she has bad grades in almost every class. In her art class, she has a teacher that listens to her and actual cares about her problems. This whole ordeal that happened is making her life miserable. When reading this book Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, it teaches us a valuable lesson.
Melinda is worried about many things. For example being threatened, being blamed for others actions, sense of helplessness, and depression. All of these things that I have listed play a big role in this book Speak. When being in high school Melinda has her mind on many things. She is jumbling a life that she isn’t proud of. She feels like a “wounded zebra sitting in the middle of the auditorium”. The importance of this is that Melinda feels wounded by what happened and feels very alone. What happened to Melinda is bothering her a great deal and all of her friends seemed to have abandoned her. Melinda’s depression is really taking over her life. For example Melinda took down her mirror, and put it in the back of the closet facing the wall. She does this because she doesn’t like seeing herself, because of the stage she is in.
In school Melinda gets treated like she is nothing. People throw things at her; push her down the bleachers when attending to events, and more. Since this is all happening to her, she is very over whelmed. In the book she is showing attempts to injure self. Meaning she bites her lip to the point that it bleeds, gaining weight because of depression, and lastly not bathing. All these people around Melinda are so caught up in their own personal life. That they don’t even notice all the horrendous things that are happening to her.
Later on in the school year Melinda is finally turning around. Rachael who is somewhat of Melinda’s friend is dating Andy Evans. Andy Evans was the one who rapped Melinda. She finally gets the courage to tell Rachel what happened at the party. When she finds out what really happened she gets really mad, and just thinks that she is jealous. When prom came around she confronted him about this ordeal and asked him if he really did rape Melinda. He denied everything, and she dumped him anyways, because she could tell he was lying. Later on in the year Melinda is now finally getting over this ordeal, and has all this weight lifted off her shoulders.
This is a great story to read if you want to see a different person’s perspective, on how they tackle the world with their problems. When reading the book speak you feel grateful that this hasn’t happened to you. You learn lot of things that you thought you knew so well about. This book also teaches you not to be self centered. Reason being is because, your friends might be going through a horrible stage in life and you have to be there for them. That’s what friends do for each other.
